Apple Music Spotlights Luanda in “Sounds of Africa” Series

As part of Apple Music’s Africa Month 2026 celebrations, the platform has turned its spotlight on Luanda, Angola, through its ongoing Sounds of Africa initiative, a cultural series dedicated to showcasing the cities shaping the continent’s musical identity.

Across Africa, major cities continue to influence global sound trends, and Luanda stands out as one of the most dynamic cultural hubs, where rhythm, dance, and storytelling are deeply embedded in everyday life. The latest edition of the Sounds of Africa project captures this essence through curated playlists and exclusive mixes that reflect both tradition and innovation.

The Sounds of Luanda playlist is curated by a collective of influential voices including Teo No Beat, Anna Joyce, and MC Prodígio. Together, they present a sonic journey that bridges generations, combining foundational Angolan recordings with modern releases that reflect the city’s evolving identity.

At the core of Luanda’s musical DNA is Semba, a traditional rhythm that has not only shaped Angola’s cultural landscape but also influenced global genres such as samba. From these roots, newer styles like Kizomba, Kuduro, and Tarraxinha have emerged, all of which continue to travel across borders and inspire international dance culture.

Speaking on the project, Teo No Beat describes Luanda as more than just a city, calling it “my school, my stage and my source of inspiration,” adding that the playlist reflects “our streets, our struggles, our celebrations, our love stories and our dreams,” ultimately telling the story of where the city has been and where it is heading.

Complementing the playlist is an exclusive DJ mix from acclaimed Angolan DJ DJ Malvado, a key figure in shaping the country’s modern dance sound. The mix features contributions from artists such as AfroKillerz, Djeff, DJ Waldo, and Teo No Beat, capturing the energy and pulse of Luanda’s vibrant dancefloor culture.

DJ Malvado describes the selection as a celebration of Angolan identity, stating that it reflects “the joy, energy, and spirit of our music,” while highlighting how Angola remains a place where music and dance are inseparable expressions of creativity and passion.

Through Sounds of Africa, Apple Music continues to highlight Luanda’s lasting influence, positioning the city as a key force in both preserving African musical heritage and driving its future evolution on the global stage.
