Belgium-based Ghanaian folklore artiste Nana Osei Twum Barima has unveiled his debut album, Journey to the Unknown, a deeply reflective body of work that transforms personal experiences into a compelling musical narrative of resilience, identity, and self-discovery.
Released through Zephyrus, the album is available in vinyl, CD, and digital formats, offering listeners an intimate look into the life and journey of an artist whose story is shaped by loss, perseverance, culture, and hope.
At the heart of Journey to the Unknown is a personal story that began with the loss of Nana Osei Twum Barima’s father at a young age. Through music, he retraces the emotional and spiritual path that followed, exploring the challenges, lessons, and triumphs that have defined his life.
“Journey to the Unknown is a deeply personal album that tells my life story through music,” the artist explains. “Every song represents a step on this journey, capturing the emotions, struggles, lessons, and hope I found along the way.”
Drawing heavily from Ghanaian folklore traditions while embracing contemporary influences, the album serves as both a personal testimony and a celebration of cultural heritage. Its songs are rooted in themes of family, spirituality, social realities, and the enduring connection between past and present.

The project features collaborations with an impressive cast of musicians, including Nicolas Mortelmans, Kaito Winse, Lara Rosseel, Roland Van Campenhout, and his uncle, Osei Korankye. Together, they help bring the album’s rich sonic landscape to life, blending traditional elements with global musical influences.
Among the standout tracks are Question to My Ancestors, Until When, and Belgium and Rain, each addressing different aspects of the human experience. The songs explore questions of identity and belonging, the importance of environmental stewardship, the role of faith in difficult times, and the determination required to overcome adversity.
Through its storytelling approach, Journey to the Unknown invites listeners to reflect on their own paths while connecting with universal themes that transcend geography and culture. The album balances personal vulnerability with broader social commentary, creating a listening experience that is both intimate and thought-provoking.
With his debut release, Nana Osei Twum Barima establishes himself as a distinctive voice in contemporary folklore music, using song as a bridge between tradition and modern life. The album stands as a testament to the power of storytelling and the resilience of the human spirit.
