Mdundo, the continent’s foremost music distribution service, is redefining the industry by enabling artists to share, market, and earn from their creations. Hosting more than 39 million monthly active users across numerous African nations, it stays at the vanguard of the digital music movement on the continent.
Starting in January 2025, Mdundo launched its semi‑annual royalty distribution cycle, rewarding hundreds of thousands of rights holders throughout Africa, among them thousands of Ghanaian musicians. To date, over 300 000 artists have received royalties via the service, highlighting Mdundo’s dedication to fostering a lasting music ecosystem for creators on the continent.
Over the last five years, Cellulant—a top African payments firm—has played a crucial role in facilitating Mdundo’s artist payouts. Its smooth cross‑border payment services guarantee prompt and dependable transfers to musicians throughout Africa. The partnership not only lets artists retrieve their earnings effortlessly but also bolsters the broader creative economy.
Martin Nielsen, Mdundo’s chief executive officer, voiced his pride in the platform’s achievements:
“Our mission is to offer African artists a sustainable platform to grow. By delivering consistent income, we are contributing not just to the success of individual artists but also to the long‑term development of the African music industry.”
A major catalyst for this expansion in Ghana has been Mdundo’s robust partnership with MTN Ghana. By offering subscription‑based services and inventive product integrations, the alliance has broadened music availability for millions of Ghanaians and generated substantial revenue for domestic artists.
Sowari Akosionu, Mdundo’s chief marketing officer, highlighted MTN Ghana’s contribution: “Our partnership with MTN Ghana has been instrumental in opening up wider access to music and, in turn, boosting artists’ earnings. Together, we’re strengthening the Ghanaian music ecosystem.”
Mdundo’s library blends global chart‑toppers with deeply local Ghanaian tracks, spanning Afrobeats, Hiplife, Highlife, and Gospel. This tailored strategy strengthens listener engagement, elevates regional artists’ profiles, and opens fresh revenue streams for rights holders.
Looking forward, Mdundo aims to disburse $1.2 million in royalties by 2026, backed by anticipated revenues of $1.7 million to $2.2 million. Expansion will stem from broader subscription offerings, deeper telecom partnerships, and the worldwide reach of its Progressive Web App (PWA). By prioritising artists, Mdundo is charting a path toward a more inclusive and lucrative future for African music.
