Ayra Starr at 24: From Cotonou to the World’s Biggest Stages

At twenty-four years old, Ayra Starr is has already surpassed the level a lot of artists aspire to attain. But achievements rarely tell you the whole story about a person. What tells you something real about Ayra Starr is that she was born in Cotonou, Benin Republic, raised in Lagos, Nigeria, and before turning 24, she had already performed on stadium tours with Coldplay, signed with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation, and earned a Grammy nomination. The math is staggering. The story behind it is even better.

On June 14, 2026, Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe turned 24. The world knows her as Ayra Starr. And if you have been paying attention, you already know that this particular birthday carries more weight than most.

The Beginning: A DM That Changed Everything

Before the awards, before the sold-out tours, before the Roc Nation announcement, she was a teenager posting song covers on Instagram, trying to find her voice in a city that already had too many of them. Born in Cotonou, Benin Republic, and raised in Lagos, Nigeria, Ayra Starr’s origin story is quite like a fairytale.

In December 2019, after uploading her original song “Damage” to Instagram, she received a direct message from Don Jazzy. She was only 17, a ridiculously young age. She spent over a year in artist development at Mavin Records before releasing her self-titled debut EP on January 22, 2021. That patience would pay off in ways nobody could have fully predicted at the time.

The EP, The Album, and the History Books

The debut EP reached number one on Nigeria’s iTunes and peaked atop Apple Music charts in Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, Sierra Leone, and Gambia. For an 18-year-old on her first project, that was already a remarkable statement.

But she was not done making statements, in fact, she merely just began. Less than seven months later, on August 6, 2021, she released her debut studio album, 19 & Dangerous. The 11-track concept album traces the journey of a Gen Z protagonist moving from adolescence to early adulthood, marked by growing confidence, ambition, emotional depth, and self-awareness. Primarily rooted in Afropop and R&B, it also drew on neo-soul, and jazz influences.

The lead single would cement her place in Nigerian music history in a way that still stands today. “Bloody Samaritan” peaked atop Nigeria’s TurnTable Top 50, making Ayra Starr the first female artist in the history of the chart to reach number one with a solo song. Prior to its arrival on streaming platforms, the song premiered on BBC Radio 1Xtra.

Rush, the World was put on notice

In September 2022, Ayra Starr released “Rush.” What followed was not a slow burn. It was a detonation.

After going viral on TikTok, “Rush” reached number 24 on the UK Singles Chart and charted in the top 10 in France and South Africa, and the top 20 in Switzerland and the Netherlands. With that, she became the first Nigerian lead female artist to appear on the UK Singles Chart. The song was certified 3x Platinum in Nigeria, and went on to earn Platinum, Diamond, and Gold certifications in Canada, France, and the United Kingdom respectively.

And then the Grammy came calling. “Rush” earned her a nomination at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards for Best African Music Performance, making her the first and youngest Nigerian female artist to be nominated in that category. She was 21 years old, and well on her way to ecoming a global household name.

The Pioneer Streak

The Sabi Girl has quite an unusual trajectory. One could say her name is synonymous with the word, “first” because of how often it appears next to that word.

She was the first solo female artist in Nigeria to reach number one on the TurnTable Top 50. She was the first Nigerian lead female artist on the UK Singles Chart. She was the first and youngest Nigerian female artist to receive a Grammy nomination for Best African Music Performance. She was also the first Afrobeats artist to be named Amazon Music’s Breakthrough Artist.

In February 2025, she became the first woman in 16 years to win the MOBO Award for Best African Music Act, and also won Best International Act at the 2025 BET Awards. Then, just months later, she won Best International Act at the 2026 MOBO Awards, making it back-to-back MOBO victories in consecutive years.Ayra Starr Makes History Again: Back-to-Back MOBO Best International Act Wins

These achievements are not by chance. They are consistent, a pattern. Ayra Starr is building quite a distinct legacy.

The Roc Nation Era

In July, 2025, She signed an international management deal with Roc Nation, the company founded by JAY-Z, while remaining signed to Mavin Records for recording. The move was designed to leverage her star power and momentum on a global scale. In an attempt to infiltrate the global market and remain a mainstay in it, this was the best possible move, as Roc Nation has everything needed to make solidify Ayra Starr as a worldwide Afrobeats giant.

Under the new management, she released. “All the Love” in February 2025. “Gimme Dat” featuring Wizkid in April. “Hot Body” all in July. Her first official collaboration with Rema, “Who’s Dat Girl,” in October. She also features on the 2026 FIFA World Cup soundtrack.

A Third Album and a Hollywood Debut

As if the music was not enough to keep track of, Ayra Starr has also spent the past year quietly expanding into film. She joined the cast of Children of Blood and Bone, the highly anticipated adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling fantasy novel, starring alongside Idris Elba, Viola Davis, and Cynthia Erivo in a story steeped in West African mythology. Paramount Pictures is set to release the film on January 15, 2027.

She has spoken candidly about how different the experience was from anything she had done before. “I’m used to being a singer and a diva on set,” she said, “but with this, in a movie, it’s not about you. You have to be on set on time. It made me get used to military time and working hard. I respect actors so much more now.”

And through all of this, the third album has been coming together. Starr Girl, her upcoming third studio album, is scheduled for release on August 14, 2026, through Mavin Records, spanning Afrobeats, R&B, alternative R&B, and dancehall. The lead single, “Where Do We Go,” was released on March 6, 2026, to positive acclaim for her confident storytelling and continued artistic growth. Still in the rollout for the album, she featured on the NPR Tiny Desk concert, and on the 12th of June, she released Tornado. In exactly two months, she drops what could be the most important album of her career.

Happy Birthday, Ayra Starr.

Twenty-four is not old by any standard. But for someone who has already rewritten as many rules as Ayra Starr has, it is a deeply significant number. She came from Cotonou. She grew up in Lagos. She posted a song on Instagram at 17 and a music mogul slid into her DMs. She was 19 when she made history on Nigeria’s biggest chart. She was 21 when she got Grammy-nominated. She was 23 when she signed with Roc Nation.

She turned 24 recently, And if we there’s anything to take away from her interestingly unusual career path, then the most interesting part of this story is still ahead of us.
