The Mavin Records star traded glamour for raw vocal power and reminded the world exactly why she is one of the most exciting young voices in global music. The post Ayra Starr Owns the NPR Tiny Desk and Teases New Album Starrgirl appeared first on HypeTribe.
Sabi girlhas been telling us she was built for this, and she never fails to prove it.
Ayra Starr made her NPR Tiny Desk debut on May 27, 2026, performing at the series’ Washington D.C. headquarters as part of its annual Black Music Month celebration. The performance dropped today, and it is already making noise for all the right reasons.
No glam. No theatrics. Just Ayra, her band, and that voice. The set she delivered was tight and well paced, moving through Afro fusion grooves, dreamy soundscapes, and high energy rhythms.
Ayra has spoken in interviews about how much of her discipline comes from her Nigerian roots, and that came through clearly in how measured and intentional every moment of the performance was. Nothing was wasted.
The middle of the set was where things got particularly interesting. She ran through “Gimme Dat” and “Who’s Dat Girl” before dropping “Tornado,” an unreleased record from her upcoming album Starrgirl.
She closed the set with “Amin” and “Orun,” two faith driven records that strip away the popstar armor entirely. It was a vulnerable and quietly powerful way to end things, reminding the audience that beneath all the chart runs and global buzz, there is a young woman who has carried a lot of personal weight to get here, and who is deeply conscious of it.
The broader context matters too. This year marks the fifth year of the Tiny Desk tradition honoring the rich culture and legacy of Black music, with NPR putting together a multi generational Black Music Month lineup that includes artists across genres and generations. The fact that Ayra Starr was selected as the African representative in that lineup is a remarkable feat. It is a statement about how far Afrobeats has traveled and how seriously the global music establishment is now taking its leading voices.
Ayra Starr has been dreaming about the Tiny Desk since she was 14. Now, at 24, she joins the list of fellow great afrobeats exports like Tems, Burna Boy, Asake, and OMAH LAY to become a select few of the African acts who have donned this stellar stage.
