BNXN’s CAPTAIN Commandeers Afrobeats’ Future
From the moment Daniel Benson shed his Buju moniker like a second skin, he’s been plotting a course toward something larger than fame. Born from a childhood nickname that spoke to natural leadership, CAPTAIN arrives as BNXN’s most vulnerable artistic statement yet—an odyssey into his psyche where triumph and tribulation sail hand in hand. Since Daniel Benson abandoned the Buju name as if shedding a second skin, he has been steering toward ambitions beyond mere notoriety. Emerging from a childhood nickname that hinted at innate leadership, CAPTAIN stands as BNXN’s most exposed creative declaration to date—an inward journey where victories and struggles move together.
Released on June 30, 2025 through T.Y.E and EMPIRE, CAPTAIN is a 16‑song expedition that boasts an ideal lineup of collaborators: Seyi Vibez, Victony, FOLA, and the Grammy‑winning Soweto Gospel Choir. In each partnership, BNXN charts personal musings about his ascent, emotional peaks and valleys, and the artistic evolution that drives this more personal endeavour.
The structure of CAPTAIN defies straightforward genre categorisation. BNXN blends Afrobeats roots with Afro‑fusion flair, R&B’s sultry charm, and hip‑hop’s raw candour. This fusion is purposeful, reflecting an artist unwilling to be boxed, exploring fresh horizons with each rhythm and tune.
The collaborations feel like nautical checkpoints. Rema exchanges verses with BNXN on “Fi Kan We Kan,” each line a calculated play in a vibe‑based chess game; Seyi Vibez injects raw charisma into the drum‑driven beat of “Set Up”; Victony and BNXN silence uncertainty on the misty echoes of “Cough Syrup”; and the Soweto Gospel Choir uplifts listeners on the contemplative closer “In Jesus Name,” providing a spiritual guide to this bold voyage.
Standouts surface as islands across a wide sea. The opening track “I Alone” admits the solitude of command; “Phenomena” exudes the glow of Lagos afternoons; “Cutesy” ventures into seductive drill while preserving BNXN’s trademark hook; “Eleyi” honours street‑grown aspirations; and the closing piece “In Jesus Name” removes swagger to expose thankfulness and humility.
In the studio, an exceptional production crew led by Kel‑P, Vampire Craze, Gemini Major, Jiggi, BlaiseBeatz, Rymez, and Synx creates intentional soundscapes that support instead of overpower his vocals. Every mix appears crafted to propel BNXN’s story from verse to chorus while maintaining drive.
The pre‑launch rollout demonstrated BNXN’s influence: tracks “Phenomena,” “Fi Kan We Kan,” “Very Soon” (ft. FOLA), and “Cutesy” alone amassed more than 185 million streams before CAPTAIN’s release. His 2024 collaborative EP with Ruger, RnB, garnered 455 million streams, and Sincerely Benson (2023) remains above 910 million—evidence of a career that keeps climbing.
This summer, BNXN brings CAPTAIN to North America, touring cities such as Atlanta, Los Angeles, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Dallas, and Vancouver. It signals that the Afrobeats vessel he steers is not only heading for new horizons—it’s leading the fleet.
At a crucial juncture for Afrobeats’ worldwide reach, CAPTAIN functions as both passport and declaration. In this way, BNXN shows that navigating fresh seas does not mean abandoning authenticity—only the courage to steer by one’s own stars.
