Boundary‑breaking musician Cheef Chebe releases his lively Afrobeat EP Mutani on April 4 2025, a work that emerged from a fateful convergence of musical fate and cultural activism. What started as an accidental meeting with Fela Kuti’s former lead guitarist BB Blues at a Kokrobite beach bar has evolved into a six‑song declaration of pan‑African revitalisation under Chebe’s MASA/Waka‑waka Movement (Make Africa Sweet Again).
The backstory of the EP matches its sonic excellence. What began as a relaxed get‑together turned into a creative blaze for Chebe (the Glasgow‑based Ghanaian polymath who goes by many monikers such as Suleman Chebe and Pulimjasco) and famed producer BB Blues. Their fervent conversation about Africa’s worldwide identity and creative promise produced three songs captured in one intense studio session, blending classic Djembe beats, ethereal Balafon tunes, and BB Blues’ signature Afro‑beat guitar style refined with Fela himself.
“Mutani isn’t merely music – it’s ancestral technology,” says Chebe, whose path from Ghanaian oral narrator to Scotland’s renaissance figure shapes every track. “When BB and I jammed, we weren’t merely crafting songs. We were aligning with centuries of resilience to energise tomorrow’s rebirth.”
Mutani comes as both a return and a revolution – evidence that when heritage and improvisation collide, borders fade. The April 4 release aligns with Ghana’s Independence Month, with listening sessions scheduled in Glasgow and Accra that showcase live performances of traditional instruments.
