Apple Music Expands “Sounds of Africa” to Francophone Cities

As part of Africa Month 2026, Apple Music is expanding its Sounds of Africa initiative by spotlighting three major cultural hubs — Abidjan, Kinshasa, and Dakar — celebrating the rich and diverse musical identities shaping Francophone Africa.

Across these cities, music serves as both a form of cultural expression and a living archive of history, capturing the rhythms, stories, and communities that define each location. Through a series of curated playlists, Apple Music brings together artists, tastemakers, and industry voices to showcase the sounds that continue to shape these influential regions.

In Abidjan, long regarded as a powerhouse of African music, the city’s sound reflects a vibrant blend of innovation and tradition. Music executive Franck Kacou describes African music as “movement, memory, and momentum,” noting that the playlist captures a sound that is deeply rooted in culture while remaining fearless and forward-thinking.

Meanwhile, Kinshasa’s contribution highlights one of the continent’s most influential musical legacies. Built on the foundations of rumba and ndombolo, the city continues to inspire new sonic directions across generations. Artist TRESOR emphasizes that Kinshasa is “not just a city… it is a sound,” reflecting a culture where music carries identity and history forward.

In Dakar, music is woven into everyday life, soundtracking moments of celebration, reflection, and community. Legendary Senegalese musician Baaba Maal highlights how the city’s sound represents a seamless blend of tradition and modernity, capturing the spirit of its people.

Each playlist is paired with an exclusive DJ mix, offering listeners a deeper, more immersive experience that bridges past and present while showcasing the evolution of Francophone Africa’s musical landscape.

Through Sounds of Africa, Apple Music continues to amplify the voices shaping the continent’s sound today, connecting global audiences to the music, culture, and stories emerging from Africa’s most influential cities.
