Ghanaian singer Gyakie is nearing the launch of her eagerly awaited debut album, After Midnight. The 17‑song collection will be released on Friday, August 29, 2025, and features a stellar roster of collaborators such as 6lack, Headie One, Young Jonn, and Shatta Wale.
In a conversation with the Grammys, Gyakie discussed the natural evolution of the album’s collaborations: “What I love about this album is that every collaboration stemmed from a real desire to connect, so it all felt organic — you can hear that these are people who truly wanted to create music together. Sometimes collaborations can be purely transactional. But on this project, it was different. These are friends who respect my music, and I respect theirs. They loved the songs, so the process was smooth and made the music even sweeter.”
Regarding the importance of collaborating with prominent artists, she added, “Seeing how influential these artists are in the industry, it’s meaningful that they decided to join my music. It’s never simple to send a track to someone at that level and have them accept, regardless of how good you are. The fact that they believed in the songs and wanted to contribute shows me I’m on the right track.”
A highlight of the album is the collaboration with Ghana’s dancehall legend Shatta Wale on the track “Harmattan.” Gyakie explained that his voice was the first she envisioned for the song: “In Ghana, when it comes to dancehall and reggae, Shatta Wale is one of the first names people mention. He’s contributed so much to the industry. After I recorded ‘Harmattan,’ I felt it needed someone else, and his was the first voice I imagined. We sent the track to him, and I could tell he loved it because he poured so much effort into his verse. I remember speaking with him on the phone, and he told me how much he enjoyed recording it and how good he thought the song was. I’m really grateful he gave his best.”
