Artist, producer, and songwriter Shai Sevin returns with a new self-produced Bandcamp-exclusive release titled “NDD”, marking his first venture into Drill music after years of work rooted in traditional hip-hop storytelling.
The track title, short for “Never Did Drill,” reflects both the experimentation and intention behind the record. Rather than fully adopting the genre’s established framework, Shai Sevin approaches Drill from a place of exploration and respect while maintaining his own distinct lyrical identity.
“NDD” was created during a studio session with producer Skxlz—known for his work on Choze’s D.I.Y project and the Drill collective Project X. Built from a minimal loop inside Logic Pro X, the record took shape organically as Shai wrote and arranged the song line by line, allowing instinct and structure to guide the process.
The result is a genre-blending record that nods to Drill aesthetics without losing the emotional and narrative depth that defines Shai Sevin’s work.
Coming from a South West London background of Pakistani and Afghan heritage, Shai Sevin has long been influenced by a diverse sonic palette—from Bollywood melodies heard in his early home life to the Hip-Hop innovation of artists like Jay-Z, Missy Elliott, and Timbaland. This blend of influences continues to shape his approach to music, rooted in rhythm, storytelling, and emotional honesty.
Before stepping into the spotlight as an artist, Sevin built a strong behind-the-scenes reputation as a songwriter and producer, contributing to records such as “Semantics” by Amplify Dot and Kano, and “2-A-Side” by Wretch 32 and Swiss of So Solid Crew. His early creative work also includes contributions to Jessie J’s “Big White Room” from the album Who You Are, as well as involvement in shaping Stylo G’s breakthrough single “My Yout.”
Reflecting on his journey, Sevin shares: “To me, it’s about the journey, not the destination. I’ve been working behind the scenes since I was fifteen. Now the music is finally speaking for itself.”
With “NDD,” Shai Sevin continues to carve out a space defined by versatility, experience, and artistic evolution. Listen to all platforms here
