Skinny Dippers return with a tender and reflective new indie single titled “When You Were It,” a wistful coming-of-age track that leans into memory, nostalgia, and the emotional weight of moments that only make sense in hindsight.

Built on layered acoustic strums, shimmering guitar textures, and soft, blended vocals, the song unfolds like a memory drifting in and out of focus. “When You Were It” captures that familiar feeling of looking back at the past with clearer understanding than you had in the moment, where small details linger while the bigger picture slowly comes into view. Inspired in part by a Maya Angelou reflection on memory and emotion, the track explores how people may forget what was said or done, but never forget how someone made them feel.

Lyrically, the song weaves together fragments of youth and everyday life—kickball games, scraped knees, rolling blackouts, and nostalgic cultural touchpoints like the “Pepsi challenge.” These scattered images mirror the way memory actually works, arriving in pieces rather than full narratives, yet still carrying emotional clarity. At the centre of the track lies its defining refrain: “I’ll forget what you said / I’ll forget what you did / But I’ll never forget how it felt / When you were it.”

Rather than settling fully into heartbreak, the song finds balance between reflection and acceptance. It acknowledges regret and nostalgia while also leaning into the quiet resilience that comes from growing up and learning to stay present. The result is an emotionally direct indie record that feels both intimate and universal, suited for late-night drives, reflective listening, or cinematic moments that call for emotional depth.

Skinny Dippers, the Brooklyn-based project led by songwriter Ryan Gross, continue to shape a sound rooted in coastal nostalgia and urban introspection. Emerging from Maine shoreline roots and evolving within New York’s indie scene, the project blends jangly guitar pop, dreamy synth layers, and soft harmonies into music that feels like a half-remembered dream. Following their debut The Town & The City, their upcoming EP Zealous Gardener expands this sonic world even further, embracing choral textures, shimmering arrangements, and a deeper emotional pull that invites listeners into a slower, more reflective space.
