Tyler, The Creator Opens Up to Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 About New Album DON’T TAP THE GLASS

In an expansive conversation with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, Tyler, The Creator peeled back the layers of his latest album, DON’T TAP THE GLASS, revealing a deliberate shift toward unfiltered fun and high-energy music. The interview covered everything from his creative process to his thoughts on fatherhood, offering fans an intimate look at the mind of one of music’s most innovative artists.

After the introspective weight of CHROMAKOPIA, Tyler shared that his new album was a deliberate return to lightheartedness. “I just wanted to be silly again,” he said. “No deep album cuts, no slow emotional shit… just fun, outrageous shit, inside jokes, and big fly talk.” Tracks like “Rah Tah Tah,” “Noid,” and “Sticky” showcase his playful side, with Tyler even referencing a viral Instagram clip as inspiration: “Get your funky ass in that tub, bitch.”

Tyler also tackled the complex debate around artistic influence versus imitation. “It’s a weird thing,” he admitted, explaining how DON’T TAP THE GLASS draws from diverse dance music cultures—New Orleans bounce, Atlanta bass, UK jungle—without being boxed into a single genre. “Some people don’t grow up in those cultures, so they don’t get it,” he said, emphasizing the importance of filtering inspiration through one’s own lens.

A lifelong Clipse fan, Tyler revealed how their new album, Let God Sort Em Out, reshaped his perspective on music. “That’s a gospel album,” he declared, praising its raw conviction. He also recounted the pressure of recording his verse for “P.O.V.”—a rare moment of self-doubt. “I did it 77 times… I almost texted Pusha like, ‘Bro, I can’t.’ But then I nailed it.”

In a rare personal moment, Tyler reflected on the idea of fatherhood. While part of him loves the “rich uncle” role, another side imagines the joys of raising a child—“dressing up as a fireman on random Thursdays, bike rides, making clothes for them.” Still, he dismissed legacy-driven motives: “When n**as say, ‘I want a kid for my legacy,’ that’s corny. You’re gonna die. What are we talking about?”*

Above all, Tyler emphasized his mission to create “urgent, upbeat shit”—music that makes people move. “I used to think I was Usher at seven,” he laughed, referencing his love for dance. “This album is finally where I can just groove for real.”
