Kenyan musician Bryvvn has released his punchy new single BRKN, a gritty and unapologetic drill track that includes the emerging talent MGZA from South America. Beyond a typical drop, BRKN signals the start of an unforeseen yet potent phase in Bryvvn’s developing sound.
The partnership is the result of a long‑term narrative. MGZA first found Bryvvn on SoundCloud in 2017 and has backed him ever since. By chance, while Bryvvn was in Cape Town, a cousin exposed him to MGZA’s music, igniting mutual admiration and a pledge to collaborate someday. That pledge has now been fulfilled with BRKN.
The track’s muse stems from its eerie cover illustration, which shows South American youth ensnared in cycles of crime and violence. I aimed to portray that scene from their viewpoint, Bryvvn says. That’s why the words are so bleak. Filmed in MGZA’s home studio, the synergy between the pair emerged immediately, with MGZA’s beats amplifying Bryvvn’s powerful vocals into a complete drill anthem.
Although listeners associate Bryvvn with R&B, BRKN is his first drill track, revealing a fresh facet of his craft. His deep, rugged flow fits seamlessly into the style, infused with Nairobi’s sheng flair. I never imagined this path, he confesses. Yet my deep voice meshes well with drill. I’ll continue to push that Nairobi sheng drill vibe—though I doubt people are prepared for what’s ahead.
The track also ties into Bryvvn’s path of autodidactic perseverance. From nocturnal sessions in Cape Town where he taught himself production, to drawing inspiration from South Africa’s emerging artists such as Nasty C and Shane Eagle, Bryvvn has consistently prospered through experimentation. That unrefined, layered style now merges effortlessly with drill’s ferocity, forging a new avenue for his sound.
With BRKN, Bryvvn heralds the onset of an exhilarating new chapter. It’s daring, unapologetic, and profoundly genuine—a declaration of reinvention from an artist who embraces change.
