St. Louis alt-country artist Adam Gaffney returns with his warm and spirited new single “Darlin,” released on March 5. The track captures the simple joy of love through a classic honky tonk lens, blending heartfelt storytelling with a lively country groove.
“Darlin” begins with a striking moment of vulnerability as Gaffney opens the song a cappella with the line, “Darlin’ won’t you take my hand.” From there, the track blossoms into a full-band honky tonk two-step that feels both timeless and refreshingly modern. Pedal steel guitar glides gracefully between the verses, adding gentle swells and rhythmic flourishes that complement Gaffney’s easygoing vocal delivery. The result is a joyful, roots-driven love song that recalls the charm of classic country while maintaining a contemporary alt-country spirit.
The story behind the song is just as personal as its lyrics. After returning to St. Louis following several years in the Southeast, Gaffney found himself rebuilding his life while working at the local Tick Tock Tavern. It was there he met Christy, the woman who would eventually inspire the song.
“I was practically homeless, paying 300 bucks to sleep on a friend’s couch every month… no car,” Gaffney recalls. “I met Christy my first day at the Tick Tock Tavern. She was wearing a sick-ass Budweiser t-shirt. We smoked together on the non-smoking patio. I just thought she was so cool. We didn’t date until a few years later after I got my life together. Sex, drugs and rock and roll is only cool for so long before it becomes toxic. It was either I quit drinking or maybe I’d have to quit music. Now we’re planning on getting married later this year.”
“Darlin” offers a preview of Gaffney’s upcoming album Product of Another Sad Song, arriving May 8 under the name Adam Gaffney and the Balladeers. The 13-song project, accompanied by four short poems, explores deeply personal themes including the loss of his mother to cancer, relationships lost and found, and his journey toward sobriety. Drawing inspiration from traditional country storytellers and folk lyricism, the album channels the spirit of legendary troubadours while maintaining Gaffney’s raw and personal voice.
Throughout the record, Gaffney performs vocals, guitar, harmonica and piano, joined by a talented backing band that includes Austin Jones, Ryan Gillespie, Laura Noelani, Kendell Scott, Karen Choi and Evan Farris, with production and engineering by Jorge Valcarcel of Boxcar. The album was mastered by Alex Saltz, known for work with Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie and Vampire Weekend. St. Louis local legend Fred Friction also contributes by reciting two of Gaffney’s poems alongside two of his own.
Having previously performed at the Newport Folk Festival and shared stages with artists such as Paul Thorn, Randall King and Austin Meade, Gaffney continues to build momentum ahead of his upcoming appearance at SXSW 2026.
With its infectious rhythm and heartfelt backstory, “Darlin” showcases Adam Gaffney’s ability to turn personal experience into timeless country songwriting, offering a joyful reminder that sometimes love arrives just when life begins to turn around
