Norwegian-Ghanaian artist Akuvi continues to showcase her emotional depth and genre-blending artistry with the release of “Poison,” a standout track from her newly released EP, Afrobeats for Emotional Gangsters (AFEG).
Serving as the fifth song on the seven-track project, “Poison” dives into the addictive cycle of on-and-off relationships, capturing the emotional turbulence that often comes with love that feels impossible to leave behind. Wrapped in moody Afrobeats rhythms, soulful melodies, and heartfelt lyricism, the song reflects the push-and-pull dynamics of emotional attachment, where passion and pain coexist.
Blending Afrofusion, neo-soul, R&B, and hip-hop influences, “Poison” highlights Akuvi’s ability to transform deeply personal experiences into music that resonates universally. Her smooth, expressive vocals glide across the production, delivering an intimate portrayal of vulnerability, longing, and emotional conflict.
The single forms part of Afrobeats for Emotional Gangsters, a deeply personal body of work that explores heartbreak, loneliness, healing, and self-discovery. Produced by Soulbase, the EP unfolds like a collection of diary entries, documenting different stages of emotional growth and the realities of navigating modern relationships.
Led by the Afro-R&B single “Whoa” featuring fellow Ghanaian artist Mellissa, the project tackles themes such as commitment fears, emotional detachment, situationships, and personal transformation. The EP closes with “Dream Big,” a collaboration with Ghanaian dancehall star Stonebwoy, adding another powerful dimension to the project’s narrative arc.
For Akuvi, music has become a vehicle for self-expression and identity. Drawing inspiration from artists such as Burna Boy and Jhené Aiko, she has crafted a sound that merges contemporary African music with soulful storytelling and poetic introspection.
Born between Ghana’s Volta Region and northern Norway, Akuvi’s artistic journey has been shaped by her multicultural background and her commitment to finding strength in vulnerability. Coming from a family where music, dance, and creative expression were central to everyday life, she has developed an approach to songwriting that feels deeply personal and refreshingly authentic.
Her growing profile has already seen her perform at the Forbes Leading Women Summit, headline shows in Oslo, and collaborate with notable artists including Stonebwoy and Shenseea. With Afrobeats for Emotional Gangsters, she continues to cement her reputation as one of the most compelling emerging voices connecting African music to global audiences.
Through “Poison,” Akuvi offers a poignant reflection on love’s most complicated emotions, delivering a song that feels both deeply personal and instantly relatable for anyone who has ever struggled to let go of a relationship that keeps pulling them back.
